Blood Donation Campaign
Padang – According to the Journal of American Medical Association, it is noted that just 1 pint of blood can save three lives. In the world, there are millions of people who are in need of blood transfusions because of surgeries, car accidents, war, natural disasters, etc.
Because of this reason, The Regional Representative of West Sumatra held blood donation campaign on 14th April 2013 titled Your Blood Makes You as a Hero: Share Blood Share Life at H. Gor Agus Salim, Padang.
This program is second program of The Regional Representatives of West Sumatra. Beside held seminar and training, we do realize taking part in society is very important. The program is form of our caring for society health.
Attended by 22 participants consisted of 7 candidates alumni, 8 grantees from State University of Padang and Bung Hatta University and 3 doctors and 4 Padang Red Cross employees.
The program began with brief explanation from doctor about eligibility requirements, blood transfusion procedure, tips for successful donation and management of adverse reactions to patients.
After that, patients will be asked to complete a donor registration form and then doctor took patient’s blood pressure and blood sample from patient’s finger to ensure that their blood iron level is sufficient for them to donate.
After all finish, patients were processed to a donor bed. The donation process took about ten to fifteen minutes. After donation, patients received refreshment where they got boiled egg, milk, bread, instant noodle to eat.
Eko Prasetyo, a patient on this program said he was happy because he could donate his blood to help many people who are really in need of blood transfusion. He had been waiting for a long time to donate his blood. “I want to say thanks in advance for this program. This is positive program for society health. It should be held for the next and regularly.”
After taking place at Gor Agus Salim, the program was continued at Pantai Purus Padang. Here, the program began at 16.00 to 17.30.
There are about 60 patients who came in all ages to donate their blood on the program. It means there are 60 blood bags are ready to transfer to save many people. For us, they are hero. They save many people by donating their blood.

That’s why the slogan of the program is Your Blood Makes You as a Hero: Share Blood Share Life. It is inspired of VDMS’s motto: Learn, Share and Encourage. We – The Regional Representative of West Sumatra – are happy getting the program as a chance for us to share life. We are sure giving blood does not just benefit recipients. Regardless of age, donating blood offers many benefits for donors.
