How did I Join MTV?
In 2010, I joined VEDHA (Viva Education of Drugs, HIV and AIDS) communities. VEDHA was established in 2005 and it began with highly amount cases of HIV/AIDS, drugs abuse and free sex, which make the youths are on precarious situation. As a result, UNICEF collaborates with Yakita foundation (foundation who expert in rehabilitation of drugs), initiated to make a program to empower youths with various participants from different regions in East Java Province. The aim of this organization is to save the youths, to keep them from drugs abuse and HIV/AIDS by giving information in positive activities such us outreaches, training, capacity building, talk show, candle light Memorial International Day Against Drugs, Youth Campaign, Socialization in specific areas (school, campus, prostitution, community) and society in general.
In 2012, MTV Staying alive opened an opportunity to some organizations in the world focusing on caring of HIV/AIDS to be a part of MTV Staying Alive Foundation and published this information in their website (www.mtvstayingalive.com). VEDHA was successful to be a part of MTV and together with MTV shares information about HIV/AIDS in society. Starting in 2012 until now, VEDHA had make a program namely SCARFS (School Community Caring for Drugs and HIV/AIDS). In this program we facilitate schools and communities, empower and establish peer educator, youth campaign, long march, expo corner, youth creative competition such us jingle, theatre, media creative, photography etc.
What are our activities and after program challenges?
MTV always holds such this training to make organizations and communities stronger. On August 2016, they invited two person from VEDHA to attend this training. Before it, VEDHA’s team attended a training in Nepal in 2012, and now MTV is holding a training in London. MTV cover all accommodation during this training. On 23rd 2016, after prepared visa and passport, my friends and me flight to London. This workshop took place from Sunday, 23rd October to Friday, 28th October 2016 in London, United Kingdom. There were 16 participants from 8 organizations from Macedonia, Armenia, Romania, China, Mexico, India, Laos and Indonesia. The aim of this activity is to equip organization with the knowledge and skills needed to increase our organization effectiveness, responsiveness, and accountability in managing and developing staff and volunteer. The objective ways are to increase our knowledge and skill in key areas of leadership and people management, develop practical, applicable tools tailored to our organization’s needs, enable to draw on our own experiences, learn from each other and use that to inform or learning, and identify priorities to address after workshop.
During this training, I got much knowledge about leadership and people management, such us introduction to organizational lifecycles, introduction to the human resource management cycle, organizational values, recruitment, selection and induction, performance management, training and development, empowering our staff and volunteer, managing challenging behavior, volunteer management, motivating and retaining our staff and volunteer, managing turn over, media and communication extra to build network through platform and to go away with actions, know techniques for testing the audience-friendliness of their communication and practical experience of improved platform use (Facebook page) and content (using their mobile phone for a ‘mobile journalist’ video recording) etc.
After this training, we will get intensive guidance during 6 months from Restless Development. The great challenge after attending this training is how to implement all obtained skills and knowledge in my organization, make the action plan, time line and all steps to make my organization stronger.
That’s all about my experience.
Hopefully, this spirit didn’t just build VEDHA more strength and be motivated, but also for the other VDMS Alumni and Grantees of East Java and all over Indonesia!
